Here are some of the most common shoulder conditions we see in our office
Rotator Cuff Injuries
A rotator cuff occurs when the tendons in the shoulder pull away from the arm bone, leading to pain and difficulty moving the arm. The rotator cuff consists of muscles and tendons that help lift and rotate the arm. Tears can be partial, where the tendon is still attached, or complete, where it fully detaches. These injuries often result from overuse or sudden trauma and are common in adults. Millions of people experience rotator cuff tears each year, though many may not show symptoms. Proper diagnosis and treatment can restore function and relieve pain.
Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition where shoulder movement becomes painful and limited. It occurs when the connective tissue around the shoulder joint thickens, stiffens, and inflames, making movement difficult. As pain increases, shoulder use decreases, causing the joint capsule to tighten, further limiting mobility. This “frozen” state can be treated through physical therapy to restore movement and reduce pain. Proper treatment can help relieve the discomfort and improve your shoulder’s range of motion.
Bursitis
Shoulder bursitis occurs when the bursa, fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones and tissues, become inflamed. In the shoulder, the subacromial bursa allows smooth movement between the rotator cuff tendons and the shoulder blade. Injuries or overuse cause fluid buildup, leading to pain and swelling. Types of shoulder bursitis include chronic (from repeated injury), acute (sudden onset due to injury), and infectious (caused by bacterial infections like staph). Proper treatment can relieve pain and restore shoulder mobility. Early diagnosis and management are key to preventing complications.
Shoulder Impingement
Shoulder impingement occurs when the top of the shoulder blade pinches the rotator cuff, leading to pain and limited movement, especially during overhead activities. This condition, also known as impingement syndrome, commonly affects athletes and those with physically demanding jobs. Causes include rotator cuff tendinitis, shoulder bursitis, and acromion deformities, which can pinch or rub the rotator cuff. Shoulder impingement is a leading cause of shoulder pain, but treatment options like physical therapy and lifestyle changes can help alleviate symptoms. Early diagnosis is key to preventing further damage.
Shoulder Arthritis
Shoulder arthritis occurs when inflammation in the shoulder joint causes pain and stiffness, making arm movement difficult. The primary joint affected is the ball-and-socket joint, where the humerus meets the scapula, known as the glenohumeral joint. Arthritis can also affect the acromioclavicular (AC) joint where the collarbone meets the acromion. Over time, arthritis wears down cartilage, which cushions the bones, leading to bone-on-bone contact and increased discomfort. Early treatment can help manage symptoms and improve joint function.
